WHO’S THAT JAILBIRD?…. IT’S DR. MATTHEW BAKER FROM PORT CHARLOTTE!

agosto 11th, 2010

Dr. Matthew Baker

Dr. Matthew Baker of Orthodontic Specialists of Florida's Port Charlotte office, was arrested on behalf of MDA's "Lock Up" event on August 11, 2010. Dr. Baker, along with other local business and community leaders volunteered to be MDA's "Jailbirds" for the day to benefit this unique community-wide event to help raise money for Jerry's Kids. "PLEASE HELP BAIL ME OUT… or the Port Charlotte residents will be in braces FOREVER! Your donation is my key to freedom!," stated Dr. Baker. He and his fellow "Jailbirds" around the Port Charlotte community helped to raise nearly $57,000 to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The funds Dr. Baker helped the MDA to raise, will provide vital services such as:

  • MDA Summer Camp – A magical week of fun and independence
  • Outpatient Clinics – Families see the top specialists for their disease
  • Equipment Assistance – Help obtaining and repairing vital medical equipment
  • Support Groups – Families and the people MDA serves sharing and caring together
  • Research – Hope for the future

MDA "Lock Up" events are a fun way to raise vital funds for the battle against neuromuscular diseases. Donations to MDA provide help and hope in many ways. Visit mda.org for information on how MDA makes a difference to people around the country and in your community. STAFF MEMBERS DO HARD TIME … WITH SOFT HEARTS

julio 31st, 2009

It's true. Staff members Toni Hysong and Trixy Buckmaster were arrested on July 31, 2009, guilty of having big hearts when it comes to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Both Toni and Trixy (representing the Mandarin, Fleming Island and Palatka offices) successfully completed jail time in order to raise $500 during The MDA Lockup Event – enough to pay for a child's wheel chair repairs for an entire year. And the MDA isn't the only one taking notice of their “good behavior.”

The famous Jerry Lewis Telethon, slated for Labor Day weekend, will be mentioning Orthodontic Specialists of Florida for its charitable work thanks to everyone's generous donation to the cause. Be sure to watch it!

A big thanks goes out to all who contributed to making this event a success for the kids. This was just one more example of how staff members at Orthodontic Specialists of Florida help the community to benefit children. Toni and Trixy say they hope to participate in the event again, citing how rewarding and unforgettable the experience was. Maybe hard time isn’t so hard after all. Way to go team!

Kapley’s Cancer Fighters Run in the National Breast Cancer Half Marathon

febrero 15th, 2009

On Feb. 15, 2009, Orthodontic Specialists of Florida participated in the National Breast Cancer Half Marathon in Jacksonville, Florida. Created by Donna Deegan, a three time breast cancer survivor, this race is the only U.S. Marathon dedicated solely to raising funds to end breast cancer.

Kapley’s Cancer Fighters, the orthodontic group team, ran with 6000 people from all over the world through the unique beach communities of Jacksonville, Neptune, and Atlantic Beaches. The course was almost 14 miles long and included 2.5 miles along the beautiful Florida coastline. Kapley’s Cancer Fighters completed the race in less than 4 hours with supporters lining the streets to cheer for the runners.

The National Breast Cancer Half Marathon raised over $800,000 during the 2008 race and hopes to surpass that goal this year. Orthodontic Specialists of Florida plan to continue helping breast cancer charities in support of their co-worker Sabrina who was diagnosed in 2008.

Shoo’s Crew For Sab Races for the Cure

octubre 27th, 2008

Race for the Cure

Tampa, FL (October 27) — Orthodontic Specialists of Florida recently felt the unfortunate realistic jolt that one feels when a family member is diagnosed with breast cancer. One of its own family members, Sabrina, was recently diagnosed and had to undergo a mastectomy for cancer that was found in her right breast.

Sabrina, 38, has been working for Dr. Shoopak since she was 18 years old. She is the clinical supervisor of his Safety Harbor and Spring Hill offices.

“To say the news was shocking would be a sincere understatement” said Dr. Shoopak. Coincidentally the Susan G. Komen foundation was planning a "Race for the Cure" awareness program on October 4th, 2008 just two weeks following Sabrina's surgery. Dr. Shoopak and over 30 of his staff members from offices throughout Tampa Bay, got together and decided to participate in this run in support of Sabrina. They fashioned banners, shirts and even decorated a port-o-potty to show their support. They coined the phrase "Shoo's crew for Sab" which they proudly flaunted on their shirts and banners. Their efforts were not only well received by the foundation but Sabrina was extremely appreciative for everyone's efforts.

Sabrina

Sabrina is recovering well and hopes to be back at work in no time.

Orthodontic Specialists of Florida is a group of offices throughout the state of Florida providing state-of-the-art orthodontic care for children and adults. Dr. Alan Shoopak has been practicing orthodontics in Florida for over 20 years. All of the practices are neighborhood offices that have convenient hours and focus on personal and professional patient care.
